The Phonics Lab {Words for Kids}

  • 1x/week | 30 minutes | Ages 4-6
  • Duration: Monthly enrollments for September, October, November

In this workshop, we read stories, work on print concepts, letter sounds, and word families so that children build a strong foundation in the basics of phonics.

Examples of CVC word families include words ending with: -at, -og, -it, ed -am, -ut, -ig, -en

Materials Needed: A large bowl and a full set of alphabet letters magnets or puzzle pieces.

  • Each class will begin with a quick review of letter sounds to ensure that learners are using the correct phonemes. Repetition is a useful and necessary tool.
  • Learners will practice sounding out words and saying sounds with the correct pronunciation.
  • Pictures will be used to help students give meaning to words but phonics is the skill that is honed.

The Reading Lab {Reading Comprehension}

  • 1x/week | 40 minutes | Ages 6-8
  • Duration: Monthly enrollments for September, October, November
  • Live Zoom Meetings

In this workshop, students who have mastered the basics of phonics (letter sounds and letter names) are invited to practice reading aloud, listening, and answering questions about various types of texts.

Texts: Poems, short stories, and books.

Prerequisites:

  • Students should be decoding, segmenting, and exposed to beginner reader books.
  • Students should have mastered letter names, letter sounds, and rhyming cvc words.
  • Each class will begin with a quick review of book concepts.
  • Learners will practice blending, segmenting, and pronunciation.
  • Pictures will be use to help students give meaning to words and there is a focus on new vocabulary words each week.

The Spelling Lab

  • 1x/week | 40 minutes | Ages 6-8
  • Duration: Monthly enrollments for September, October, November

Spelling is not the same skill as reading and becoming proficient will take practice. Each week, your student will learn simple tools to spell sight words and words that can be spell phonetically.

Programs Used: University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) rooted in The Science of Reading

Prerequisites:

  • Students should be decoding, blending, segmenting, and reading at grade level.
  • Each class will begin with a review of the phonemes.
  • Learners will practice saying sounds, reading sounds, and segmenting syllables in words.
  • Learners will be required to spell using a dry erase board during class times and there will be spelling bees.

Writing workshop for children

The Writing Lab {Creative}

  • 1x/week | 40 minutes | Ages 6-8
  • Duration: Monthly enrollments for September, October, November
  • Live Zoom Meetings

What if your child didn’t dread writing? It’s possible. Give your child a purpose for their writing and a space to share and they may experience a transformation that turns writing from chore to a habit.

Prerequisites:

  • Students should be decoding, blending, segmenting, and reading.
  • Students do not need to be proficient in spelling to participate.

*Parents are asked not to use the journal as a time correct spelling.

  • Each class will begin with a story, game, or a short video.
  • Learners will be asked to brainstorm their thoughts about specific questions related to the topic so that “I don’t know what to write” isn’t a valid response. 😉
  • Learners will be asked to write in their journals using prompts and then given the opportunity to share.

Fluency Your Way

You may choose to enroll in one, two, or three of the above learning labs. As a member, students will meet each week, online, and work on specific literacy skills. When you enroll you will get access to a student portal.

Can I enroll more than one student? Yes. Enroll each student separately.

Can I enroll older students in the classes listed with lower age ranges? Yes. However, students more than 2 years older than the top of the age range may benefit more from private tutoring as the graphics and content is created for a younger learning group.

Can I enroll for one month? Yes. Each payment covers one month of classes. You may end your enrollment at any time. Note: Please cancel before your monthly payment is due as refunds are not offered.

Do you provide formal assessments for these classes? No.

My child is not reading, can you assure me your program will get my child reading in one month? No. Learning to read, speak, or write well is a process that takes time and your child’s journey is unique. These courses are designed to teach specific skills and as your child learns each skill, it is the expectation that each skill will improve their literacy skills. The amount of time it takes for your child to learn each skill or strategy will vary.
