ELA Workshop: Spelling

Decoding is the not same as encoding which means that reading is not the same skill as spelling. In fact, many student who can read well struggle with spelling. Foundations: Phonics

Get excited about what’s in a book. In this program, we work on print concepts, letter sounds, and word families so that children have a strong foundation in the basics of reading. Students will practice identifying and pronouncing letters, blending sounds, and reading simple sentences aloud using phonics. This is a learning to read class.

Connections is for fluent readers who are ready to begin reading higher level informational and technical scientific texts. The vocabulary may be beyond the student’s grade level; however, students will practice reading, making inferences, and using their prior knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, Latin roots and derive meaning. Each week, students should expect read aloud, learn new topic-specific vocabulary, and review a grammar concept. Review weekly topics in the course catalog.
