The Spelling Lab {1st-2nd Grade Words} – Wednesdays

July 2 @ 6:15 pm 6:50 pm

Eastern Standard Time (EST)

Spelling is not the same skill as reading and becoming proficient will take practice. Over the course of four weeks, your student will learn simple tools to spell sight words and words that can be sound out.

Programs Used: University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) rooted in The Science of Reading

Prerequisites:

Students should be decoding, blending, segmenting, and reading most grade level text proficiently.

  • Depending on the group, I will increase level of words to ensure students are challenged.

Each class will begin with a review of the phonemes.

Learners will practice saying sounds, reading sounds, and segmenting syllables in words. Learners will be required to spell using a dry erase board during class times and there will be spelling bees.

Students will be introduced to at least one new spelling rule per week.

For example, studenst may learn the floss rule. “The “floss” spelling rule in English states that when a one-syllable word ends in “f”, “l”, “s”, or “z” (the letters in “floss”) after a short vowel sound, the final consonant is doubled.”
