The Reading Lab {Reading to Learn | Reading Comprehension} – Fridays

In this workshop, students who have mastered the basics of phonics (letter sounds and letter names) are invited to practice reading aloud, listening, and answering questions about various types of texts.

Texts: Poems, short stories, and books.

Prerequisites:

  • Students should have mastered letter names, letter sounds, and rhyming cvc words.
  • Students should be decoding, segmenting, and substituting.
  • Students should be comfortable reading decoding books (Bob Books)

Each class will begin with a quick review of book concepts. Learners will practice blending, segmenting, and pronunciation.

  • Pictures will be use to help students give meaning to words.
  • New vocabulary words will be introduced each week.
  • Students will be expected to read in class with peers.
  • Students will engage in answering questions about the text for reading comprehension.
